Good news Rekero Camp have updated - couldn't post the photo though
While many thousands of miles away our first guests of the season will be starting to pack their bags, Dudu and I returned two weeks ago to find the Mara swathed in long grass and wonderfully quiet. However the peace on the plains is not reflected here in camp where the team are busy making preparations for the year ahead. It is perhaps one of those rare occasions when roles are reversed and the wildlife will be watching us going about our business rather than vice versa. If they are I hope they will note that we are making excellent progress.
With everyone now back from their own communities, there is a cacophony of sounds as we collaborate with carpenters, electricians, tailors and plumbers to give the camp the attentive care it deserves. It is also a chance for the team to take advantage of this rare time alone. Between the deliveries and works agendas there are games of football and volleyball that echo around the Mara in the late afternoons. Then when the evenings draw in we take the opportunity of getting a night time fix of the latest DVD’s brought back from abroad and share stories by the fire from families back home.
This is, I guess, our team meeting and although it comes in a different shape and size to others across the globe we like to think it equally productive. So from a Rekero Camp on schedule for a fantastic new season, we wish you all a wonderful week.
Jono and all the team

Rekero Newsletter from Gordie 2nd June
Update from Gordie - apologies the photo isnt attached and i dont know why i seem to be unable to do it? It's a lovely photo of a hippo yawning.
Most of our nearest and dearest neighbours appear to have flourished in the six weeks that we have been gone. Down in the river the resident crocodile sits soaking up the morning sun, watching and listening from his very favourite rock. He seems untroubled by the hippo, who continue to be extremely vocal, or the elephants and their new babies. He also appears to have no regard for the large group of Topi who are doing a great job of reducing the height of the grass in front of camp.
Unlike me, our scaly friend isn’t concerned that the lions up stream at Ol Kiombo are faring less well. They have been spotted unsuccessfully hunting hartebeest and looking thinner than they should. It would appear they are suffering from a case of too many mouths to feed. With small cubs, seven at the last count, and two very large males it is a demanding feeding schedule they need to keep up. While things are getting quite desperate for them, our little crocodile cares not. He simply keeps one hopeful eye on the bank above and a more wary one on the hippos in the pool below.
He has bigger things on his mind and is no doubt dreaming wildebeest dreams. It is that which reminds me it is time to find out just how these herds are progressing towards the very spot where he lies in wait. The stage is set for a truly dramatic season ahead.
Have a good one won’t you,
Gordie

I know Doogs, nature at it's worst and too many mouths to feed. It's not a sight i would want to see, poor little hungry cubs.

Thanks Lai for the updates.
Its unfortunate these big cats have such unpredictable lives, but that is the system they live in, a shift in the balance and it works against them. Sad to see!

PS: I need a holiday!!!

Re: Rekero - News and Community
Heres the latest newsletter from Rekero.
As promised last week it is that time of year when we begin to turn our attention to the runners and riders of the 2010 migration. As the first tantalising reports come in, we can then spend the evenings speculating when this annual jamboree will burst over our horizon.
Mid last week the news in from the Serengeti was that the main thrust of the animals are moving up the eastern side of the national park. The largest concentration is reportedly sitting around Lobo, at the ‘gateway to the north’, in the area between Lobo Hill and the western corridor. In the last two weeks they have been making good ground however, thanks to the plentiful long grass and sporadic rain, we have an unusual situation for this time of year. The lunge north has resulted in fragmentation that stretches back to the Seronera region where there are still large herds of zebra that are not budging. This gives us an altogether more complicated picture to consider.
For now at least, these intrepid travellers have some distance and many hazards to negotiate before we will be woken in the night by the sound of distant grunts. The important thing is that they are coming and it shouldn’t be too long before the front runners arrive. In the meantime back here on the banks of the Talek there is the small matter of the leopard call we can hear from camp.
Have a good one won’t you,
Gordie
