The latest camp news from Rekero ......written by Jono
One of my favourite spots in camp is our small beach which is found just down from the mess nestled in the undergrowth and hidden from everyday view. On high days and holidays, at dusk, a candle lit path leads you there to where a blazing fire illuminates the river. Just as the sun sets and the first stars punctuate the sky, our Masai team celebrate by putting on a powerful show of chanting and heckling through the half darkness. Their ceremony is filled with songs of love, life and war, transfixing all that watch on. A traditional competition of manhood then unfolds as each man jumps towards the heavens. It is a display of concentration and conviction synonymous of the fierce pride with which this culture is protected.
Two weeks ago the Weber family were witness to such an occasion. It was one of vibrant colour accompanied by the haunting sounds and vaulting that is the Masai dance. Afterwards the family were invited to compete, displaying a slightly more western fashion of looser limbs and predictably not so much height. After much laughter our warriors turned and melted into the darkness with spears and bows aloft.
They left behind our small group to toast the beauty of what we had just experienced and these fine surroundings.
Our best salaams,
Jono

Its easy Lai all you do is take a pic of the email with the MW3Snap camera you use for the Web Cams. Sometimes you have to take 2. Then just post them as a pic

Re: Rekero - News and Community
I know WS - and I have had to admit defeat on this
Thanks for posting, it's a great read as ever. We spent time with Dickson K and John both of whom are so knowledgeable and great fun, nothing was ever too much trouble and by the end of the week John's vehicle had a huge stack of reference books so we could check each beetle, flower and bug ..............

Re: Rekero - News and Community
That must have been a fantastic experience Lia, is that what kindled your interest in insects.

Re: Rekero - News and Community
No it is really Pete was is the bug and insect person, but i am learning
It was one morning Pete and I decided to walk with Dickson instead of going on a game drive in the vehicle. Then some of the others decided it would be fun too. In the end a group of us went taking some askari (guards) with us in case the lions and buff got too close. It was great, we saw so much, including the ants on the move and you certainly want to keep out of their way, they bite! I've also walked up in Lewa and the flora and fauna is spectacular, not to mention the Rhino!

One complaint (sorry ) you've chopped off the picture of Shingu and her little ones that was at the bottom of the Newsletter !!! It's such a lovely picture I'm sure everyone will love it - can you post same ? (I tried to resave the picture and post it on here but it wouldn't allow me to do so )
Checked out the link for the Asilia Camp, looks beautiful
