Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Been doing a little bit of investigating regarding the name Malaika, the DSWT had an elephant with that name, unfortunately she died during labour in 2000. Apparently the baby was breech.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
for checking that AM. Now I must admit if it was an from DSWT I was thinking of it probably wouldn't have been from that far back so goodness knows who I'm getting mixed up with
Ooooh poor Malaika at DSWT giving birth to a breach baby ele Do you know if the little one survived ?

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
I haven't been able to find much either Doogs. I did see something the other day that Zawadi was seen in an area called single gorge I think, not sure, working off memory as I can't find the post but I think it was Paul Kirui on FB. I know I saw a post but I can't find it so I know she has been seen. No news on Malaika though.
I could be wrong about who to credit but i did see she was seen recently. No other info or pics. I'll keep trying to find the post.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Perhaps Aatish will find Zawadi or Paul K. Jonathan's off to Bhutan, and India etc for 7 weeks so we won't be hearing any news from the Mara from him for a while.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
You beat me to it WS, I saw that earlier today as well. Knowing Jackson's spelling I'm pretty sure that's what he means. If he got the other side of her face there would be no doubt. I just hope somebody sees Malaika again soon.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
At least she has been spotted. Olive seems to have vanished at the moment though. Aatish our friend on here his Blog is Masai Mara Safaris, has been looking for her for a few days now, along with Paul Kirui.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Thanks WS, I'm on his blog as well. Seems they've been getting some good cheetah sightings recently though. Paul's blog hasn't been updated in a while. I thought Olive recently had cubs, maybe she's moving them around. Hopeful for news soon.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Report from Kicheche Camp's FB 04/03/2012 :-
"Zawadi, aged 16, was spotted last week at one of her familiar granite haunts. It appears she is 'cub-less'. This is of course conjecture but she did not appear to be lactating which is ominous even though that cub would be five months now and not suckling so much. Zawadi's territory has always held a high density of mortal enemies, namely hyenas and baboons to say nothing of lions. She has not had... enormous success bringing up cubs over the years and with her advancing years and decline of hunting skills this was always going to be a big ask.
Many people who were smart enough to visit in the beautiful months of January and early February had some astonishing sightings of her (enc) and these will be cherished forever.
It would be wrong to confirm anything as we are talking about a very enigmatic and elusive animal, but the portents are not optimistic".

That doesn't look good Doogs. Hopefully she's just well hidden but I know the odds of that. Good find.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Still hoping for the best but this was the photo posted with the update Doogs posted. I didn't see Malaika the first time I looked at the pic, she blends in so well with the background. It's a wonderful pic.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Aaaah yes, didn't see her at first either - she certainly does blend in well in those rocks.
Fingers, toes and everything else crossed that she's still with us

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
I also posted this on Jackson's thread. Jackson has posted on FB that he has heard Shadow was seen mating. He also said he knew some people who would be out all day and he'd try to get more confirmation. I hope for the best but looks like the cub may be gone.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
This picture was posted on Jackson's FB page today. Unfortunately she is still alone and it's looking more like little Malaika is gone. It is a wonderful picture of Shadow, but i really hoped to find the cub by now. Looks like we will have to very soon submit to the harsh reality of life in the Mara.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Such a sad thought Ronnie, but as you say, the harsh reality of life. Zawadi is such a star but an old mum so it must be very tough for her.

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Has anyone received ANY news about Zawadi since March? I know she is 16 years old and may be gone, but I'm hoping that she is still around. I know she was last seen mating, but no one has seen her since. She may have moved to a new location after her cubs were killed. Please let me know if you know anything. She's my favorite leopard and I'm going crazy not hearing about her! Thanks!

Re: Zawadi (aka Shadow)
Hi MissLeopard
Welcome to WAA.
I've emailed our friend Aatish Patel of Masai Mara Safaris, to see if he has any news about Zawadi, he is also close friends with Paul Kiriu, and I've asked the question on Pauls FB Page. We will check with others out there, it looks as though you've already asked on Jonethen Scotts Blog, at least I'm guessing its you, and see what we can find out, and post it here if we hear anything. Zawadi's a fantastic Lady, and we were so sad to hear she'd lost her Cub, but she's getting on a bit now for a Leopard, and to be still bringing up Cubs at her age is a big ask. Fingers X we will get some news of her
